The loudest part
The top of the funnel is just the loudest part, not the most important one. It's visible and emotional. An empty calendar is a feeling you have every morning.
The middle is invisible and procedural, which means the place where most money is lost is also the place nobody is watching. Leads come in and quietly go cold because a follow-up was slow, a quote sat unsent, a question went unanswered for two days.
Filling a bucket with a hole in it
This is why pouring traffic into a broken middle feels like progress and produces almost nothing. The cost per lead drops in the dashboard and the cost per customer stays exactly where it was, because the leads were never the constraint.
Instrument the middle
The businesses that grow without raising their budget usually did one unglamorous thing. They stopped staring at the top and instrumented the middle: how many inquiries got a same-day reply, how many quotes converted, where the silence happened.
A funnel is a chain, and a chain doesn't get stronger by adding more links to the first one. It gets stronger at the weakest point, which is almost never the point that hurts the most to look at.
